Overview

The COnnecting Minds to Progress AI in Medicine Seminar Series (COMPASS) is a student-led monthly online event that brings together students and professionals from various disciplines related to artificial intelligence (AI) and medical imaging for career advancement opportunities. The seminar series will feature presentations by leading experts and researchers from academia, clinics, and industry, who will share their insights and experiences on the latest developments in this exciting and rapidly evolving field. The seminar series will also provide an opportunity for the participants to network and interact with each other to foster life-long collaborations and knowledge exchange across the globe.

Target Audience

The target audience of the seminar series is students, residents, clinicians, researchers and professionals in any of the following fields:

  • Medical Physics
  • Computer science
  • Radiology
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Pathology

The seminars are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about AI and medical imaging, regardless of their level of expertise, background or geographical location. 

Duration and Frequency

The seminar series will be held once a month, on the 3rd Friday of the month, starting from February 2024. Each seminar will last for one hour, including a 40-minute presentation by the speaker and a 20-minute Q&A session with the audience. A half-hour networking session will follow immediately after the Q&A as a drop-in session.

Format and Delivery Mode

The seminar series will be delivered online via a video conferencing platform that allows for live interaction and communication. The participants will be able to join the seminar using their computers, tablets, or smartphones, and will be able to ask questions and make comments using the chat or microphone features. The seminar will also be recorded and made available for later viewing on YouTube. Additionally, the participants will be able to join a Slack channel for each seminar, where they can continue the discussion and exchange ideas with the speaker and other attendees. Two weeks prior to each seminar, the speaker will provide one publication on the topic, either from their work or a recent work by others to provide an illustrative overview of the topic. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the seminar series, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the concepts and principles of AI and medical imaging.
  • Learn about current state-of-the-art and future trends of AI in medical imaging.
  • Appreciate the challenges and opportunities of applying AI to medical imaging.
  • Identify the potential applications and impacts of AI to medical imaging in various domains and contexts.
  • Connect and collaborate with other participants who share similar interests and goals.

About COMPASS

COMPASS is a multi-lab initiative between The Medical Artificial Intelligence (MAI) Lab, Lagos Nigeria, Multimodal Imaging of Neurodegenerative Diseases (MiND) Lab, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, the Kurt Lab, University of Washington, Oregon, USA, and MRI Uganda, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda. The COMPASS Committee consists of the following members, who are passionate and dedicated to promoting AI and medical imaging globally. They are a team of volunteers, who will be responsible for organizing and hosting monthly seminars, preparing and distributing the promotional materials, collecting and analysing the feedback, and facilitating networking.
