The Medical Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MAI Lab) was proud to take part in the 2026 ISMRM & ISMRT Annual Meeting & Exhibition, held in Cape Town from 9–14 May 2026. The gathering was historic — the first time the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine has held its Annual Meeting on the African continent. Fittingly, this year’s theme was Ubuntu — “I am because we are.”

A major highlight for our team was a plenary address by our Executive Director, Maruf Adewole, PhD, who delivered the NIBIB New Horizons Lecture. His talk spotlighted AI-driven medical imaging for resource-constrained settings and the work we are driving from Lagos to advance global health equity.

We were also delighted to see our colleague Tolulope Olusuyi present a digital poster, “Developing Brain Age Models for Predicting Pathological Brain Aging in African Population,” sharing our team’s research with the global magnetic resonance community.

Seeing African-led AI and medical imaging research take centre stage on the world’s largest MRI platform reflects exactly the future MAI Lab is working to build — and we look forward to deepening that contribution in the years ahead.
