Speaker Bio:

Dr. Mirza Faisal Beg is a Professor in the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University, and the Chief Executive and the Chief Scientific Officer of Voronoi Health Analytics Inc., located in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Beg earned his bachelor’s in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, and his MS and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University and Johns Hopkins University USA, respectively. He has received the SFU Faculty of Applied Science’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2011), the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (2012), and the SFU Faculty of Science Excellence in Research Award (2015). He has published extensively on novel algorithms and computational biomarkers for dementia, in particular Alzheimer’s and Fronto-temporal lobar dementia from brain MRI and FDG-PET, and Glaucoma and AMD from retina OCT scans. His current research aims to use MRI and PET-CT imaging understand how diseases and interventions affect individual organs and tissues, and vice versa, using quantitative measures of body composition, develop personalized models for predicting future clinical outcomes as a function of disease and interventions.
